Driver Ed- Licsencing Process

Drivers Ed. First Day

  • Fill out Information/Checklist Forms
  • Go over the minimum requirements for obtaining a license
  • Complete a DL 1M learners permit and driver license application form
  • Furnish proof of social security, residency, and original identification document certifying name and date of birth
  • Pass a multiple-choice sign and knowledge test. MUST answer all 10-road signs correctly before being able to proceed to the second part of the exam. Students are required to answer at least 80% of the general knowledge questions correctly (20 out of 25)
  • Pass a vision test
  • Have a digitized photo taken at DMV
  • 16.3 to get license
  • Must hold learners for 9 months
  • 36 hours of classroom Drivers Ed.
  • 14 hours of Behind the Wheel (7 driving 7 observing)
  • Driving Log 40 hours 10 of which must be after sunset
  • Parent/Guardian permission
  • The 90-day provisional license (PDL-90) is valid when accompanied by a valid Virginia learners permit


How to sign up for behind the wheel-

  • See Mr.Vandell at appropriate lunch odd-even
  • He will have the Student Information forms Active/Inactive
  • Students get to select the date and teacher from available teacher dates and start times
  • Students get and take home the Parent Permission Form and have their parents fill it out. This is where the parent gives us permission to give the student the license on the last day after they have passed the class and satisfied all other requirements.
  • The students bring a check for $100.00 made payable to JAMES RIVER HIGH SCHOOL on the first day.
