Driver Ed - Frequently Asked Questions
In this area I will try and address some of the questions that have come up throughout my experience as both a classroom Drivers Ed. Teacher and B-T-W (Behind The wheel/in car) Instructor that may be helpful. In addition to my experiences I have gotten assistance from other Classroom and B-T-W teachers. These ideas are provided in an attempt to assist you and your teen become better/safer drivers by no means are these the only way.
What does the 40hours of practice driving entail?
- The 40 hours of practice needs to be logged and must include at least 10hrs of driving while it is dark. It should include a variety of situations starting with basic forward tracking and lane position both straight and throughout turns. We have made a guide available to the students that include some ideas for practice situations. Almost a “how to” for the 40 hours.
Where are some good places to start?
-In the beginning I would recommend going to an open area like a school or some other parking lot EARLY in the morning on the weekend (7-9am). Then when both of you feel comfortable drive in a neighborhood early on a weekend. Remember take a gradual progression throughout the skills and challenges
What are some tips for backing up/driving in reverse?
- In driving in reverse place your left hand on the top of the wheel and your right hand on the back of the passenger seat. This will enable the driver to see out the back window. Placing the left hand at the top of the steering wheel makes you able to push your hand the direction you want the car to go. (Example if you push your hand towards the passenger side the car turns towards the passenger side.)
Does James River/Chesterfield Co. Public Schools teach Drivers Ed in the summer?
Yes JRHS/CCPS does teach both Classroom (not offered at JRHS every year but offered at usually more than one location) and in-car over the summer. Classroom can be done a variety of ways by taking 10 th grade PE during the summer session, by taking an 8 day Classroom only course (that may require the student to take it again during the regular school year), or by taking Driver Ed. Online (see JRHS Guidance for info. on this option).
In car is offered throughout the summer with the exception of two weeks towards the end of august while all of our cars go through a yearly check and are reissued.
How does the licensing process work?
- The temporary license (PDL-90) is issued by the in car teacher once the student has completed all of the requirements for a license. The temporary license (PDL-90) and the learners permit make a valid drivers license for 90 days until the DMV can get the permanent license processed and the student go through the licensing ceremony at L. C. Bird High School. The licensing ceremony is held once a month at L. C. Bird for the entire county.
