Piano Lab meets the needs of a wide variety of musicians and future musicians. You do not have to own a piano to enroll in this class. This course is perfect for absolute beginners. You do not need to be able to read notes to join this class. Students who play other instruments but always wanted to learn piano will benefit from this course. Students interested in becoming professional organists or church musicians will welcome the chance to practice during the precious hours from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Advanced pianists who want to further their understanding of keyboard theory, or who want to explore composition should consider taking this course All singers and choral students will find that Piano Lab provides an important complement to their main musical interests Students who are considering a major in music should be strongly encouraged to take this class, as all music majors MUST learn to play the piano. Piano Lab is for all students--it's a fun elective and a break from the ordinary! We encourage everyone to take advantage of an opportunity to learn the world's most popular instrument for free during the school day. Research has proven that keyboard lessons improve both math and reading scores, and provide a wide range of social-emotional benefits. In this course, students will explore all piano styles, including but not limited to: Blues Gospel Rock Country Classical Folk World Music Students will receive a solid foundation in note reading, but will also learn to play their favorite tunes "by ear." The course will provide individualized keyboard instructions for students, enabling them to progress at an appropriate pace for their ability level. Beginning students will learn how to read notes and chord diagrams Students will also investigate songwriting techniques Students preparing for a major in music at the college level will explore the standard repertoire of Western classical music All students will study music theory and materials. Music theory is the study of the "grammar" of music The course requirements include class participation and practice. You do not have to own a piano to enroll in this class. The instructor will provide class time for your individual practice needs. Participation in concerts and "recitals" is optional. We will not "force" anyone to perform, but we will encourage everyone to try, in order to learn strategies and techniques for playing with others and in front of audiences. Non-threatening "playing checkups" will allow the teacher to monitor your progress.
