Computer Integrated Applications
Computer Integrated Applications (CIA) is a year course designed for those
students who have successfully developed the touch method of keyboarding
in middle school and would like to further their computer applications skills.
Students will utilize Microsoft Office to build their knowledge of word
processing, spreadsheets, database and graphics using an integrated approach.
Prerequisite: Touch Method Keyboarding Skill
Business Computer Application
Students spend a 9 weeks on each of the following components of Microsoft
Office 2000: Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint The major emphasis is a hands-on,
laboratory style approach. Students develop the skills necessary to solve
problems using integration activities, and business related applications.
Electronic Communication
In Desktop Publishing students develop proficiency in using desktop publishing
software to create a variety of business publications. Students actively
use the internet to increase understanding, efficiency, and potential to
maximize time on-line. Students will develop an understanding of the Internet,
how it works, and the use of a browser and different search engines. Students
will learn how to make the internet an effective tool and to make web pages.
Students work with hardware and software to develop desktop presentation.
Office 2000, MS Publisher, Windows '98, PowerPoint, Front Page and HTML
are currently used in this class. Lab fee required.
Management Information Systems
Students study advanced integrated computer applications (Microsoft office),
networking and telecommunications and the impact of new and emerging technologies
in each of these areas. Windows '98 and Office 97 are used in this course.
Lab fee required.
Artificial Intelligence
Students are introduced to Multimedia Presentation through the use of PowerPoint.
Students develop logic and programming skills using Windows98, Visual Basic
6.0. Students also learn to use HTML in the making of WEB pages. The completion
of a course project uses all packages learned including integration of Visual
Basic and Microsoft Office 2000. This is an exciting new field that prepares
students to program in the windows environment and on the Internet. Lab
fee required.
WebMaster
Advanced Multimedia skills will be explored. Logic and design, and file
handling will be a major focus of this class. Computer skills will be reinforced.
HTML, DreamWeaver, Flash and other WEB page programming utilities will be
used. Class projects will include the cross-curriculum school projects,
personal web sites, and pages for the JRHS site. Lab fee required.
Cisco Networking 1 & 2
Cisco Networking 1 & 2 Honors - This two-year program focuses on the skills
students (grades 11-12) need to design, build and maintain small- to medium-sized
networks. Upon successful completion of the two-year program, students will
be eligible to take the CISCO Certified Networking Associates (CCNA) examination.
Good reasoning and sequencing abilities, knowledge of PC technology, good
attention to detail and problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret
technical manuals are desirable aptitudes to be successful in this course.
Students also receive college credit for the course as offered by the duel
enrollment program with John Tyler Community College. Recommended preparatory
courses - Keyboarding/Computer Applications and Algebra II. Lab Fee- $25.00
- required.
Cisco Networking 3
Cisco Networking 3 Honors - This course will cover advanced router configurations,
LAN switching theory, VLANs, and advanced LAN and LAN switched design, Novell
IBX, and threaded case studies
Cisco Networking 4
Cisco Networking 4 Honors - This course will cover WAN theory and design,
WAN technology, PPP, frame relay, ISDN, Network troubleshooting, national
SCANS skills, and threaded case studies.
